16th century english oak coffer on paw sledge feet

16th century anglo italian oak chest on paw sledge  feet .

Circa 1540.

The three moulded panel front with a mastic composition inlay ,this is the earliest form of inlay and is mentioned in oak furniture the british tradition by victor chinnery page 197 figure 2:220.

Also a chest with mastic inlay and also on sledge feet sold as lot number 74 at sothebys the clive sherwood collection 22 may 2002  and sold for £7790.

This english chest has an  italian feel based on the construction of a cassone,the sledge feet with a gothic arch and paw feet.

It has a later elm top ,two of the base boards are also later and the top of the hinges have been repaired.

Dimensions are : 48" wide,20" deep and 26.5" high.

Good colour with a good original surface
