A 17th Century Carved and Dated Bible Box.

Exeter 1680

A rare example of a group of known chests attributed to the workshop of Thomas Dennis and William Searle located at Ottery St Mary Exeter.

Most of these examples are of chests/coffers and I know of a few bible boxes which makes this example quite a find.

Of boarded construction the single plank top with moulded edge front and back with scribed dog tooth side edges, the front carved with botanical design typical if not the signature of Thomas Dennis.

The sides and backboards have molded edges to the bottom over a single plank base.

What is interesting is the left-hand side is initialed and dated I.P 1690 and I know of a chest with the dates A.B 1682 also to the side which could be the same family and another chest M.S 1687 and an identical box but with polychrome A.L 1672 and i have previously sold an example I.B 1680. I can send over links to these other examples if of interest.

Good condition with a replaced lock, the hinges were replaced a long while ago and the side rails are gone.

Even color and patina and a real find for the connoisseur collector.
