A Rare Pair Of English Tudor Profile Panels.

English Circa 1500

This rare pair of panels are thick and chunky with the best untouched surface that i have had the pleasure of handling in a long while.

Depicting a husband and wife side profile within a central lozenge ,leaf and bud to each bottom corner and an eagle / falcon to each top corner.

Eagles and falcons can be found on lots of Tudor panelling .

The eagle:The King of Birds.Consistently depicted first in the bird section of medieval bestiaries, the eagle was likened to Christ, the divine king, and in this way continued to serve as the symbol of an ideal leader. The eagle's keen eyesight was likened to Christ's all-seeing divine power.

The falcon: Henry VII adopted the falcon as a King's beast when he married Elizabeth of York.

The profiles are somewhat naive in design as opposed to the detail of the birds.

A great pair of panels that are really chunky with a dry crusty surface that is seldom found these days. This pair were purchased in 1986 at the Dr David Spencer Collection. Sold by Holloways, Banbury, Oxfordshire and thankfully his collecting mantra was for a dry untouched surface.
