A 16th Century Carved Oak Panel .

English mid 16th .

A carved oak panel depicting the arms of the Beauforts .

A swagged urn over a roundel with the Portcullis above another swagged urn.

The portcullis emblem of the Beauforts was drawn from the castle they were named after. Although the line was disbarred, it still represented Henry’s blood connection to Edward III, and it was important for him to emphasise this lineage. Henry used it on his coins, architectural decorations, portraits, book illuminations, and more.

Margaret Beaufort the founder of the Tudor dynasty was a Educationalist, scholar and philanthropist and funded Cambridge university and the portcullis can be seen all over King’s College Chapel which was completed after her death in 1509.

In good order with traces of red polychrome in the gouge carved urns and of good colour,it has been cut to the sides to square it off for display.
