A Charles I Carved Oak Coffer Front.

Lancashire dated 1637

The top rail is carved with the verse from Ecclesiastes 1:3

" WHAT PROFIT HATH A MAN OF AL HIS LABOUR WHICH HE TAKETH.VANITY OF VANITIES SAITH THE PREACHER AL IS VANITY ECCL 123".

Which essentially asks what good does a person gain from all their hard work in life, implying that earthly achievements may be fleeting and ultimately meaningless without a spiritual perspective.

The rails are carved with entwined thistle and roses; these are symbols that appear in the context of King Charles I and the relationship between Scotland and England.

The top end panels are carved with a typical Lancashire floral design and then two panels one with the initials H  S seperated with a cruciform and the other with the date 1637 above six panels again with The Thistle and Rose.

Displays well it would make a good overmantle, headboard or wall settle.

In good order with a good colour and surface.Signs of old beetle damage to the back right hand corner that has been hardened.
