A Rare Henry VIII Oak Chest With Cross Hatch Design.

English Circa 1530.

This wonderful chest with cross hatching decoration to all four sides and lid,the front board with the spandrels cut into the board as opposed to added still retains most of its height,a small wedge has been added to the right rear foot to level it up.

Colour is light and it has a natural surface with white to highlight the scratch carving this could be lime or it could just be the old build up of dust but it gives this little chest a pop of excitement when viewed.

Hinges and lockplate are period replacements but fit well.

I have only seen six of these chests in my career two were sold by Period Oak Antiques ,two in private collections ,one in the Shakespeares Birthplace Trust and the fragmentary example that was recovererd from the wreck of the Mary Rose that sank in 1545.
