A Rare Medieval Stone Water Stoup.

14th century French granite.

A simple but rare stoup in the form of a primitively carved human head with almond shaped eyes and a long broad nose.

In good condition, the face itself is all complete with well formed brows which enhance the serenity of  his expression.

In good solid condition the facing right hand side has a crack and there is a chip out of the front of the bowl and displays well.

A stoup is a receptacle for holding holy water.
In the porch near to the church door. People about to enter the church would dip their index finger in the water and make the sign of the cross upon themselves.
This practice was stopped following the Reformation and many of the stoups were removed.
