A Medieval Carved Oak Corbel Depicting A Beast Head.

English Circa 1480

A cheeky carved oak corbel depicting the head of a beast or possibly a lion, with his face and protruding tongue emerging from his curly mane.

Its gapping expression with wide open eyes an effect achieved by the wide band carved across its brow its big tongue flopping out of its mouth,he appears to be as alarmed by us as we might be of him.

Heads of similar style can be seen in Suffolk churches such as Little Whelnetham and Bacton,Bury St Edmunds and Hawsted where they are listed as beasts or lions .
In The Bestiaries the lion is described as the king of the beasts and a guardian to Christians .
In good condition with old repairs one to the nose down to the tongue and one along the top left side moulding and the top has been capped with a thin 19th century piece of oak ,good colour and patina.

10" (26cm) Wide.
7"   (18cm) High.
