A French Gothic Carved Oak Coffer.

Probably Normandy Circa 1500

A Special chest of joined construction.

The plank lid with breadboard ends opening to reveal a candle tray, the front with four tracery panels with the two that flank the large ornate lock plate with faces to each corner, one of a jester wearing a cap with donkeys ears to show stupidity and stubbornness and the other the bearded head of Herod or a jew relating to i presume Matthew 2:1-2 and Herod the great, a genius or a fool. The sides with twin parchemin panels and the back with three plain panels.

Standing almost square and still retaining its original height and ironwork.

There is an iron patch to the top of the lid where the hasp has been historically taken out and a faint shadow running along the base where originally there would have been a plinth base.

Good colour and patina.
A similar example was sold at Sotheby's Haute Epoque October 2008.
