England 14th Century

Carved with the head of a man wearing a chaperon hat in a turban style with a great expression on his face showing impressive sideburns.

In good condition with no losses, this is because he was an internal feature as churches had the ugly grotesques outside and kings, clergy, and other dignitaries inside usually up high out of the way from iconoclasts and the elements.

He was removed from a 17th century farmhouse in Cumbria in the 80's where he was built into a Victorian fireplace.

Carved from Cumbrian red sandstone.
