A 17th Century Oak Wainscot Chair.

Of joined construction this bold chair has two quirky features, firstly the initials on the crest rail which are J.W over B must have been carved by a guy who needed glasses as the J is carved like a reversed L which must have disappointed the owner at some stage of its residence, but then I am sure this was overlooked by the sight of the outrageously turned front legs that are almost a dropped tear design and personally these are what drew me to the chair.
The crest rail with foliage and initials over a plain back panel, down swept arms over a plank seat, the lovely legs united by a chunky box stretcher.
Good color and patina with later restoration, the back legs have been tipped and there is a small strip replaced at the back of the seat.
A chunky unusual chair that will always bring on a smile when looked at.
