A 17th Century Welsh Oak Coffer With Bullseye Design.

Monmouth Circa 1660

Of joined construction, this chest has a four-panel lid over the front also with four panels each with a central bullseye, the stiles and muntin rails are also carved with the bullseye design. The sides with twin panels again with the bullseye design. The back consists of five panels and each rail with a double molded edge, quality construction, and detail as one would expect with early Welsh craftsmanship.

The bullseye design is typical of Monmouthshire and can be found on other pieces of oak furniture from this period.
Victor Chinnery discusses this design in Oak Furniture The British Tradition (Revised edition) pages 284 and 365.
