A Rare Carved Oak Corbel Depicting The Trinity.

English Circa 1800

This unusual corbel carved in oak depicts The Trinity, the three faces of God that merge into one face when viewed from each side.

The Christian doctrine of the Trinity is the central doctrine concerning the nature of God in most Christian churches, which defines one God existing in three coequal, coeternal, consubstantial divine persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Holy Spirit, three distinct persons sharing one essence/substance/nature.

It must have been a very competent carver to have designed and executed this piece as although religious this example is designed in a folk style with no connotations to God as a face that we are all familiar with instead here we have the face of an everyday person that one could read as christ is among us and we do not know who he is until we find him...
