A Fine and Rare Elizabethan Oak Newel Stair Column.

It is a pleasure to handle and offer this wonderful Elizabethan carved oak Newel stair column.

This important column would have been the starting pillar of a grand newel staircase .The fluted column with a leafy base and corinthian capital,the base decorated with carved mirrors in interlacing strapwork and the crown in the form of a seated lion holding an indented cartouche bearing the merchant mark HM/KM and the initials VOKM through the centre.

In very good condition with minor restorations to the column and base, carved in one piece which is a feat in itself given its size and extreme craftmanship of the lion .

The back of the column is plain and cornered the lion is carved in the round.

Great colour and surface an amazing piece of early art that presents its self as a stand alone piece.

Similar columns can be seen in the screen in the hall Magdalen College Oxford.

Standing proud at 75" (190cm) High and 7.5" (18cm) square although as the lion is postioned at an angle he sits at 10" (25cm).
