A Rare Medieval Carved Corbel Depicting The Devil.

French Circa 1500

This rare corbel which has been used as a water spout is carved in a soft wood with traces of polychrome depicting the head of the Devil .

His emaciated head leaning forward mouth open showing his teeth hunched shoulders with claws gripped tightly ,pointed ears and curled horns

A humanoid representation of  the beast.

As you can see from the photos he has old beatle dammage which has been waxed over time to fill their holes ,the base is secured to a 19th century pine board with loses to he right hand elbow which have been primitively repaired.

Solid and displays perfectly. A rare sinister addition for any collection of early woodwork.
