17th Century Figure Of Christ Seated on the Cold stone.

This wonderful carving in the round from The Netherlands carved in the last quater of of the century depicts Christ seated on the cold stone,this example with out his hands tied.

The theme of this scene cannot be found in the gospels. But Jesus must have experienced this state of mind. We know this moment also from our own experience: turning inwards to find ourselves again, isolation, not so much panic as melancholy, the realization of the irreversibility of the course of events.

Presented in good order with a very rich patina .

His right folded arm has been professionally restored at some stage and there are shrinking cracks to the base ,showing faint traces of old polychrome .
