A Gnarly James I Carved Oak Bible Box.

Circa 1600

This chunky box is of boarded construction all boards are cleft with prominent medullary rays and a fantastic colour and surface.

The front and sides are carved with a double row of nulling with the top row being larger than the bottom ,both with a scratched lancet between the carving to give the appearance of Gothic windows.

The single plank lid with a chipped carved edge with the later initials E.S.

painted to the underside and a single board base which is inset to the box this is an early design seen on Tudor chests and boxes.

Original hinges and a replaced lock ,this box has been well used over its life and is presented with all its bruises on show ,it has 19th century screws to the front and the lid has been split at some time .

Saying all that it has survived with plenty of life left in it ,a solid useable box with a chunky country look.
