A 16th Century Stone Head of Edward II

This realistic life size carving of the head of Edward II was found in a garden in Herefordshire around 30 yrs ago and has just come to me from a collector in Dorset.

Carved with flowing bob hair cut and beard wearing a crown with the initials E R incorporated in to the design for EDWARD REX .

In good order recently put on this stand but also looks good with out the stand ,slight weathered loss to his moustache and left eye.

Edward II was the fourth son of Edward I. Since all his brothers had died before him, he ascended as the only existing heir when his father died in 1307.

Edward II is known for the political upheaval that ensued when he granted unprecedented control to his favorite and rumored lover Piers Gaveston. Edward summoned Gaveston back from his father’s ordered exile and gave him the earldom of Cornwall, a title only bestowed on royalty.

Edward was imprisoned executed in 1327.

I presume this head may have been in a gallery of similar sculptures depicting the past kings and queens of England .
