An 18th Century Bronze Rooster Weathervane or Spire

English circa 1800

This extremely rare rooster is cast in bronze with traces of gold leaf guilding in traditional style of the church rooster.

This example is by repute from Warwick castle and was purchased in the early 80's ,the castle was sold in 1978 to the Tussauds group after 374 years in the same family and Tussauds then began an extensive restoration and items were sent to auction.

This may explain why this example is in bronze as most weathervanes were copper or tin and a bronze example would be worthy of a castle.

Now displayed on a Victorian iron spire stand.

Folk art at its best.
