An 18th Century Welsh Coffor Bach

Pembrokeshire Circa 1730

A rare Welsh oak and inlaid coffor bach made from well figured oak which has a rich colour. The front constructed from a single board inlaid with two borders with central star motive ,dovetailed to the sides above a single drawer also with inlaid borders.Standing on turned legs with spade feet.The lid is also a single plank with internal lopers that slot into the back board. Working lock and key.

Inlay was an optional extra, usually found on good quality pieces or those that are known to have been special, and in effect it replaced carving in certain areas in this period. Inlaid decoration was found in many parts of the country, but flourished particularly in the south, with close similarities in patterns from south Pembrokeshire through to the Vale of Glamorgan.

This chest was purchased 30 yrs ago at Olympia antiques fair London.

In original condition with a glass like surface and amazing colour to include its lock and key,a small loss to the back right hand spade foot.
