A 16th Century Parchemin Panel Door.

This English Panel is carved with a parchemin and two Merchants marks with the number 4 and a crucifix below .

In the Bible, number 4 means creation. This number directly relates to the creative ability of God. ... It would also be the mark of seasons which was used to identify different celebrations and feasts in the Bible. Among everything that was created are 4 important elements which are earth, air, fire, and water. The "Sign of Four" was also an outgrowth of an ancient symbol adopted by the Romans and by Christianity, Chi Rho (XP), standing for the first two letters of Christus in Greek letters; this was simplified to a reversed "4" in Medieval times.there are many other meanings of the number that i could mention but its easy to research if you are interested.

This merchant mark is very similar to marks found in Norwich but there are so many variations that few are known with actual business names recorded to them.

Back to the panel ,its a good size with a good colour and Patina.
