A Rare English Medieval Carved Oak Panel.

Mid 15th Century.

This rare panel Depicts the moment Judas plants a kiss on Jesus of Nazareth in the Garden of Gethsemane and seals his own fate: to be remembered as history’s most famous traitor.

Jesus can be seen in the center of the panel sporting a forked beard ,Judas with his moneybag around his waist kissing his right cheek a soldier in the left top corner Peter to his left side placing his sword back into his scabbard after cutting off the left ear of Malchus who can be seen at the bottom of the panel holding his left ear with a lamp held in his right hand.

But by identifying Jesus to the Jewish authorities, Judas set into motion the series of events that became the foundations of the Christian faith: Jesus’s arrest, his trial, his death by crucifixion, and eventually his resurrection, known collectively as the Passion of Christ.

This remarkable panel is in good condition showing signs of worm dammage that do not detract from the humourous mind of the carver who depicts the soldier and Judas as ugly grotesques he obviously had a problem with traitors and authority ,mounted in a later ebonised black frame.

35 cm Wide

55 cm High.

A rare depiction of early art that has survived the Reformation and Civil war .
