A Dated 17th Century Oak Chest And Oil Painting.

SOLD

This is a fun and interesting lot ,a 17th century carved oak chest from Lancashire / Chester region of joined construction ,the front with three carved panels the center panel carved with a fan shaped flower head with the initials I A and dated 1683 ,single panel sides and a plank top.

It also comes with an early 20th century oil painting of the chest in a beamed setting with a portrait and pewter plates in the background ,along with a charcoal and chalk sketch of a man and a pencil drawing original to a print called Relics Of The Revolution printed in the Windsor Magazine signed Fred Roe .

This chest was by repute purchased from Fred Gordon Roe in the mid 60's the son of Fred Roe author of books on early oak furniture and church chests and chairs which he illustrated himself  ,the oil painting does look like his style but unfortunately it is not signed and is painted on an oak panel from a piece of furniture.

The chest is in country condition with part of the floor replaced with period timber ,the hinges are later ,the top has been braced and there are knocks here and there ,saying that it is a solid chest with a light colour and wonderful patina ,the painting is painted on an oak panel framed in oak with old paint to imitate marble .

It is a piece of social history and the first time i have come across or ever seen an item of furniture with an accompanying painting of it in situ at some stage in its 336 yr history.
