Of six plank construction the front carved with central flower head with a guilloche strapwork terminating in a foliate quatrefoil (hows that for a description)flanking the stapled lockplate with the Noel family coat of arms and the date 1620 beneath ,this style of carving is typical of Somerset Gloucester area and similar examples can be seen in Chinnery's book Oak Furniture the British tradion. .

Stands well with its original lockplate and strap hinges unfortunately the hasp has gone leaving its scar on the lid ,the facing left hand side has split from top to bottom and has been fixed with three blacksmith made staples ,the interior has been lined with newspaper from The London Weekly Journal dated 1814 with a good colour and patina. 

Its interesting to think that this chest started life in Somerset in 1620  then was in London area 1814 then known and recorded in Scotland in 1924 then in Yorkshire around 1970 and then down to me in East Sussex in 2019 so a well travelled chest ,i find this exciting as we often own these early items but have no idea of where they have been ....
