James I Carved Oak Chest ,Exeter / Devon.

A wonderful chest carved to the highest order.

The five panel top over a heavily carved front with two applied arcaded panels dividing the front into four arches with leaf and bud corners ,the muntins with a strap work design typical of exeter and the designs of  Jan Vredeman de Vries .

What makes this chest special is that the sides are carved in a similar fashion and at great expense for the time.

A quality chest in good order and colour.
