A 16th Century Oak Linenfold Chest.

The three panelled lid over a two panelled front carved with broad linenfolds.

Joined construction of stocky proportions ,the oak is a light colour showing good grain pattern .

This chest has character from the past 450 yrs that it has been in use and ouses country charm .

The rear right hand leg has the most wonderful crude country repair ,the original leg which had snapped off level with the base is replaced with a chunk of oak hewn into shape and simply nailed on this repair must have been undertaken at least 200yrs ago showing oxidisation to the rosehead nails and a crud and patina built up on the wood over these years.

The facing right hand lid panel has Essex painted on it in old Georgian English and i presume the owners name would have been painted on the other two panels going across the lid.

The hinges are later and the lockplate is an associated period replacement.

94cm (37") Wide

48cm (19") Deep

63cm (25") High

The chest is solid and stands well with plenty to make you smile if you appreciate country repairs and the idea of this chest being given to a worker from the squire as it was broken who then nailed a leg on it and carried on using it for the next chapter in its life story (Romantic fool that i am).
