18th Century Carved Salt Cellar.

Carved in chestnut in the form of a bearded male head,

this salt cellar is carved in the round with a dug out centre a pine back and associated fruitwood hat.

Carved slightly grotesque with flared nostrils and protruding lips showing a great grain pattern to his cheeks.

An artisan or folk item carved for personal use and hung in the fireplace to keep the salt dry .
