A Dated Thomas Dennis Chest Front.

Constructed For the Walrond family Dulford House Collumpton Devon .

A Joined oak chest front carved with botanical imagery, the two panels with typical Devonshire floral design rising from an urn, both flanking a central stile of the same carved decoration, with the initials and date E.W.1675  The upper frieze and lower rail carved with S-scrolls .

At some stage this front has been used as cupboard doors and has been cut in half and then put back together and hung as an overmantle .

On the back is a cutting from The Times August 1871 regarding Sale Of A Remarkable Estate and the story relating to the sale of Dulford House Collumpton and the estate of  Mr.Bethel Walrond.

Academically this is important as this chest would have been constructed in Ottery St Mary which is only 19 miles away from Collumpton and with the estate surname being Walrond and this chest front bearing the initials E.W  it is most likely to have been made for this family and to be able to put a name to initials and to know it was kept in the family for 196 yrs is quite special ,so many thanks to the clever person who attached the paper cutting to the back of the panel in 1871 .
