A Rare Elizabethan Carved oak Fertility Figure Possibly depicting Queen Elizabeth I.

Rare in its form this small corbel depicting an Angel in Elizabethan dress including a ruff around her kneck , her breasts exposed holding the head of a child between her legs as if to indicate child birth.

Examples appear as caryatids with one breast exposed and a hand on the nipple to represent Fertility but this example is a one off the imagination of the carver showing through.

Could it possibly be depicting Queen Elizabeth I in the hope of marriage and an heir to the Throne ,we can only surmise but it is plausible as the Angel depicted has a crown upon her head and is dressed like the Queen.

The carving is of high order and fine detail .

8.5"(22cms) high

3.5"(9cms) wide
