An interesting 18th century carved oak figure depicting a jester.

The professional clown employed to entertain the king or nobleman of the middle ages .He was also referred to as a fool,buffon or clown and is always seen holding a mock sceptre called a bauble which was adorned by a carved head or the inflated bladder of an animal.

This little fellow is dressed in his motley coat and three pointed cowl holding his mock sceptre which depicts a baby jester .

Good colour and the carving is of a high standard .

9" (23cm) High.

An interesting carving of a subject rarely seen carved in the round.
