A Rare Medieval Carved Oak Woodwose Panel

An exciting find this medieval panel carved with two Woodwose figures ,one covered in hair the other with only hairy arms , both have one hand in the air as if they are waving with a tree trunk in the other and both with comical facial expressions.

The Woodwose or wildman is a mythical figure that appears in the artwork and literature of Medieval Europe, the defining characteristic of the figure is his wildness the forest man.

Examples are found in churches as misericords roof bosses ,manuscripts and a good example is the Font at St.Bartolomew Orford.

The panel is in good order with signs of old worm damage and the bottom facing left hand corner has been restored (this is only visible from the back)good colour and patina.

11"(29cms) Wide

12.5"(32cms)High
