A Mid 16th Century Iron Bound Poor Box

Circa 1550.

This Alms box is dug out from a trunk section of what looks like chestnut bound with iron straps ,a delightful lockplate with pinched corners retaining its original hasp ,a second locking device in the form of a bracket for a padlock (later screwlock included) to be fixed and a ring attached to the side where it would have been chained to a wooden block or wall..

The lid which looks like elm has a large hinge fixing it to the trunk again with pinched corners serated edge and pierced heart to the top (this has been re attached to the trunk with a later repair) and iron money slot all iron work is attached with hand cut nails.

I like the way although it has not got three visual lockplates it still needed three seperate keyholders to empty as in the church chests we know so well ,so there is possibilities it has church connections .

 A good colour and patina.

9" (23cms)High

5.5"(14cms) Diameter base

5"(13cms) Diameter top

An exciting item to have found and it also comes with a later working screw lock .
