Two Early 17th Century Carved Oak Lion Finials

Depicting seated lions holding shields.

One is fully polychrome with a gold mane and hand painted coat of arms to his shield standing on a scrolled capital base with detailed carving a real stunner.

The other is quite stumpy in appearance which makes you smile and has no polychrome at all and is smaller than the other so it must have been placed just out of vision with the fully polychrome example taking centre stage.

Definately carved from the same hand as the scroll capital, shield and mane are the same and i presume these came from a larger coat of arms possibly from an overmantle but i stand corrected if anybody knows overwise.

The polychrome example is a work of art and the complete coat of arms an exreme rarity.

Small loses to shield and face.
