A Rare And Important High Gothic Figure Of St.Catherine Of Alexandria.

It is with pleasure that i am able to offer this serene figure.

French Circa 1450.

Carved in oak depicting St.Catherine richly dressed and crowned, as befits her rank as a princess here shown reading a book, she was the patron saint of students and scholars. Because she refused to relinquish her faith under torture, she was revered in northern Europe during the Renaissance as a powerful helper for penitents in times of need. With the shattered wheel at her left side she stands victoriously over emperor Maximinus, secure in her eternal, spiritual life.

Faint traces of red polychrome to the folds of her robes and carved by a master as the details are of the highest order.

In very good order showing signs of old worm and beetle damage to the base and back where she would have stood against a cold damp wall ,the back of the base has been built up a long time ago so she stands level ,the book has been refixed to her hand and part of the wheel has been replaced.
