Mid 17th Century Welsh Carved Oak Wainscot chair.

From the private collection of Donald Smith and illustrated in Old Furniture And Woodwork Batsford Books 1937.

The back carved with the classic Welsh bulls eye design ,the bottom panel with a lozenge then a panel with 24 bullseyes and then the crest rail with a load more.

Turned front legs stamped with the owners initials C.W and stamped with the ritual protection mark VV the mark of the cult of the Vigin Mary.

United by a box stretcher with a good color.

The seat is later and there is a small loss to the side rail under the side and two holes have been drilled in the lozenge panel (i presume this was done to tie a cushion ).

An interesting chair and as Welsh as they come.
