16th Century Welsh Oak Clamp Fronted Ark.

Provenance:The Abbey House ,Malmesbury.

This rare Tudor chest that sits within a group known to have been constructed in The Black Mountain region of The Brecon Becons are all similar with wide stiles decorated with channel-moulding and turned in feet.

Constructed of riven timber with an unusually flat canted lid consisting of three overlapping boards,the front consisting of a single plank clamped with wide stile ends all held together by wedges and pegs.

Standing with no loss of height this chest is a good example showing the development from storage chest to a piece of vernacular furniture.

Good untouched surface with a natural patina and colour in all the right spots .
