A Very interesting 17th century Wainscot chair.

Interesting in that it is constructed in Ash and not oak .

I presume it is an estate made chair with wood that was locally sourced by a joiner with country chair making preferences.

A solid upright chair with 19th century dark brown paint that gives it a very folky look with the red ash coming through in the ends of the arms.

Arch crest rail with gouged flower motif above a single panel back carved with a lozenge with central rose ,showing the scribe lines beneath the worn paint.

Horizontal arms over bobbin turned front legs united by a box stretcher the front with fantastic wear and grain pattern.

This chair was Purchased from Mary Bellis in 1974 and then sold at Sotheby's THE OAK & COUNTRY SALE Olympia London 26th March 2002 as lot 245 for the sum of £2820.

Sotheby's stated that the chair was probably Scottish .

So that equates to this chair being unseen from the market for the past 13 years made from Ash and with a good provenance .
