A Mid 17th Century Carved Oak Hanging Mural Cupboard .

This exceptional cupboard is constructed of a plank boarded carcass ,the sides with a double moulding and joined front incorporating carving and turning of the highest order.

The single plank top with dentil moulding over a joined frame with the three stiles carved with a grapevine growing out of an urn.The door rails carved with a foliate scroll encasing two rows of turned spindles with the top row being reversed baluster and the bottom row being rising baluster over column balusters.

The interior with two fixed shelves.

Victor Chinnery discusses both hanging cupboards and mural cupboards in some detail (page 339).principally they were used for storing food stuffs and for precious or fragile objects such as glasswares.Not only was glass easily damaged but because it was expensive it was an important indication of a family's wealth and this cupboard Screams WEALTH....
