A Wonderful Child's 17th Century Coffer.

This rare little chest sits at only 21" wide and 13" high and must have been a childs item and it is so cute.

The carcass is of boarded constuction with crescent shaped side cut outs with an applied moulding to the front and sides.

The lid is of joined construction with a single panel ,all corners held with a single peg .This is a later 18th century addition as there is oxidation from the nails in all the appropriate areas relating to the hinge and  hasp .

The back has a strip of oak supporting the hinges which is a country addition probably done when the lid was replaced ,i have no explanation why as there are no signs of damage to warrant this only that as it being a childs chest the parent understood that it would be opened more frequently and closed with more force than an adults whimsical fool that i am.

Good colour and patina an allround good piece..

13" high

21" wide

13" deep.
