A 19th Century Copper Weather -Cock.

In the form of a cockerel it has a fully rounded repousse copper body and would have once sat on a church spire.

Exposure to the elements has necessitated soldered repairs to the hollow tube but has also given a wonderfully weathered surface.

Sitting on an associated oak stand this big old brut is a champion cock in my eyes .

23" Wide

24" High (not on stand)

5" Deep

A weather -cock is shown on the Bayeux Tapestry and was used on church spires, where it not only indicated the direction of the wind but also acted as a reminder of human frailty (Peter's betrayal of Jesus)and the need for Christian vigilance. The word "Vane" is derived from the old English fana, meaning flag or banner.

Full bodied weathervanes like this example were more complicated to construct and more expensive to produce than flat bodied two dimensional designs, but were inherently more sculptural and better suited to surface decoration.

There are traces of red paint to his comb and he has a natural faded verdigris.
