A Rare English Oak Tudor Board Silver Chest Circa 1540 of small proportions. .

Henry VIII period

This small chest which is constructed in a six plank fashion has an unnoticeable strengthening design which undoubtedly means it was constructed to hold excessive weight .

Unlike other designs which are just six planks pegged together this chest has a tusk tennon on the base boards right hand side and an angle cut on the left hand front and rear bottom corners of the front and back board so that when assembled the tennon locks in the side for strength and the angle cut means the base board will never drop ,hence it being able to hold more weight  Genius....

This is a rare design and one i have never seen before.

The chest stands at its original height with gothic cusped arches with chamfered edges.

The front and lid with horizontal moulded bands top and bottom with verticle stamped band left and right.

Riven timber with original iron work including a large lockplate and hasp.

The best colour and patination one would expect from 450 years of use and touching.

Amazingly this chest is in original condition with no alterations at all.

32.5" Wide

16" Deep

24" high

Another nice touch is that there is an old depositories lable to the back from Dunns depositories Bromley Kent dated 1949 .

Stating ownership to Lieutenant Colonel C.T.D Lindsay.

The closest comparison i can find to this chest is lot 672 Rous Lench collection and page 35 The Dictionary of English Furniture Macquoid and Edwards.

Please get in touch for further images as the three listed only tell part of the story.
