18th Century Primitive Food Hutch.

Discovered in a barn in Ludlow Shropshire two years ago

I just love the simplicity of design of this cupboard .

The front and back boards are nailed to the interior shelves that have been tusk tennoned to the sides and the door hinged and that is that simple..

I have had deep debates with colleagues regarding the timber and we have decided that the wood is Black Poplar a wood that was used in medieval iron bound chests.

In fact this cupboard is of Medieval design but i would guess at 18th century construction and that it was used as a food hutch.

The timber is riven and adzed ,the facing left hand foot is still a lump where the not was to big to slice down.

Two of the back boards are pine replacements and one of the tennon pegs is now a nail .

27" Wide

10.5"Deep
