A rare example of English Medieval Woodwork

This medieval English board chest of small proportions. Constructed of riven oak boards, secured with wooden pins.

The sides terminate in shaped Gothic tracery composed of trefoil-headed lancets flanked by outward facing buttresses.

Original lid  that has two witches marks inscribed to the left hand side and the initials GW and a small creature inscribed to the right hand side, original lock, lock-plate, hinges, and nearly full height the rear foot of the facing right hand side has been built up by 1" as to make it sit level.

The surface is a deeply dry patinated natural coloration that exhibits no signs of alteration

Few examples of English case furniture of this early date survive so i feel honoured to be offering this great piece of history for sale.

For similar examples of design see The Fares Chest a 15th century board chest with closely related tracery sides  in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, illustrated as cat. 301 in English Medieval Furniture and Woodwork.

Also a 15th century chest with applied trefoil lancets that closely match the sides of this chest was from the collection of Peter Gwynn, lot 32, The Peter Gwynn Collection, Sotheby’s, 27 November, 2001

Width 33" x Height 23" x Depth 20.5"
